Three Things That Would Have Been Helpful When I Was A Substitute Teacher
Three things that would have been helpful when I was a substitute teacher. Be sure to include these the next time you create sub plans!
Being a substitute teacher is both challenging and rewarding. It's unpredictable, keeps you on your toes, and requires you to be adaptable and patient. But let's be honest, sometimes you just wish you had a heads-up on what to expect. Here are a few things that would have made my sub jobs easier!
A Relevant Contact Sheet
Those giant staff lists? Not exactly helpful. What you really need is a cheat sheet with go-to people for different situations. Need curriculum help? Here's your contact. Behavior question? This person's got your back. Feeling faint? This is the nurse's extension.
A Description of Procedure
Lesson plans are great, but knowing the school's routines is just as important. What happens when a student finishes early? What about latecomers? Where's the stash of extra pencils? Having answers to these everyday questions can prevent minor meltdowns and keep the day running smoothly.
Details of Other Responsibilities
Some teachers have after-school meetings, while others get to unwind in the teacher's lounge. A sub wouldn't know the difference unless they were told. A detailed schedule with break times, duties outside of class, and even perks like a teacher's lounge coffee machine would be a lifesaver.
